I just got back home from 3 weeks near Katherine in the Northern Territory, once again this is a work trip so I didn't get much time to go out shooting. On the one day I got off I decided to head out to Edith Falls. I checked to see if any of my co-workers were interested, given that it was 40 degrees and very humid I ended up driving out there alone.

In the dry season Edith Falls is swarming with tourists but in the wet season it is completely. I took a quick stroll around the bottom falls and then decided to walk to the top falls despite the heat. The walk to the top falls is about 2km - mostly uphill. Going slowly and keeping hydrated I made my way up there. I could see a stunning storm in the distance which looked like it would miss my spot.

But if it did hit, the rain had to be a lot nicer than the heat!

I continued on and after another hundred meters I slipped and rolled my ankle. I've had some bad injuries before and I instantly knew that this one was bad. I screamed a word that was not particularly polite - lucky no one was around to hear it! That was the problem though, I thought that I had broken my ankle while all alone in the bush and with about 1 km to walk back to the car.

After the pain subsided I checked my camera gear. My tripod had copped another scratch but my camera was ok and my bag had protected the rest of my gear from damage in the fall. I did some quick checked on my ankle, it didn't seem too bad so I made my way gingerly to my feet I could put weight on it so it couldn't be too bad - right?

I'd come all that way so I wasn't about to go home without getting a photo of the falls. I got there to find the storm quickly approaching, but before it was a stunning rainbow!

I quickly got my camera out but the rain started to come down, I hobbled over rocks to a good position and started shooting handheld. In between shots I had to lower the camera to stop the lens from getting wet and I had to quickly raise the camera, take my shot then lower it so my shots were not blurred by water drops on the lens.

After the rainbow faded I decided it was time to go. The water was really coming down now and being in the low point of terrain by a flowing river had me concerned that I might get flooded! I grabbed my poncho but I was already well soaked by the time I got it on - same with the rain cover to my bag! I started to walk back very carefully, my ankle being quite painful again. It was a slow careful walk back to the car and a very uncomfortable drive back to the hotel.

The next day the doctor diagnosed a sprain and prescribed ice, strapping and a rest. It's still quite sore but to get a fantastic waterfall shot with a rainbow behind it was worth the effort!
